TMS Therapy in Memphis

Advanced, Non-Invasive Treatment for Depression & OCD

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment designed for the clinical management of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), while also helping decrease anxiety symptoms associated with depression.

TMS therapy delivers targeted magnetic stimulation using advanced technology developed to support precise, personalized treatment without the need for sedation or anesthesia. The system is designed to improve clinical efficiency while maintaining a comfortable and stable patient experience.

What is a TMS Treatment

TMS Treatment & Clinical Oversight by Caitlin Harrell PMHNP

TMS treatments at Blues & Soul Psychiatry are performed under psychiatric supervision with individualized treatment planning and careful clinical monitoring throughout the course of care.

Our TMS program includes mapping and treatment oversight by Caitlin Harrell. Caitlin has completed advanced specialized training through Duke University focused specifically on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), including mapping techniques, treatment delivery, patient safety, and interventional psychiatry best practices.

In addition to her psychiatric training, Caitlin brings prior intensive care unit (ICU) nursing experience to her work in interventional psychiatry. Her background in high-acuity medical settings contributes to a strong foundation in patient monitoring, clinical assessment, safety, and compassionate care for individuals navigating complex medical and psychiatric conditions.

Mapping is a critical component of TMS treatment and helps ensure precise, individualized targeting based on each patient’s neurophysiology. Caitlin works closely with our psychiatric team to support treatment accuracy, patient comfort, symptom monitoring, and continuity of care throughout the treatment process.

Our goal is to provide TMS care that is both scientifically grounded and deeply personalized, combining advanced neuromodulation technology with compassionate psychiatric support.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

in Memphis

At Blues & Soul Psychiatry, we offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as part of our interventional psychiatry services for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety-related conditions, and other mood disorders that have not adequately responded to traditional treatment.

TMS is a noninvasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Unlike medications, TMS does not circulate through the body and does not require sedation or anesthesia. Patients remain awake and alert during treatment and are able to return to work, school, or daily activities afterward.

How TMS Works

TMS targets areas of the brain that may be underactive in depression and related conditions, particularly regions involved in mood, motivation, concentration, and emotional regulation. During treatment, a magnetic coil is positioned comfortably against the scalp, delivering focused magnetic stimulation to these neural networks.

Over time, repeated stimulation can help improve communication within mood-regulating pathways of the brain and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress.

What Treatment Is Like

TMS treatments are performed in a calm, supportive outpatient setting using the Magstim Inspire system. Sessions are typically administered five days per week over several weeks, depending on the individualized treatment plan.

Most patients describe the sensation as a light tapping on the scalp during treatment. Common side effects are generally mild and may include temporary scalp discomfort or headache early in the treatment course.

At Blues & Soul Psychiatry, TMS is administered by trained clinical staff under psychiatric supervision in a high-touch therapeutic environment designed to feel both clinically grounded and emotionally supportive.

Who May Benefit From TMS

TMS may be appropriate for individuals who:

  • Continue to struggle despite antidepressant treatment
  • Experience unwanted medication side effects
  • Prefer a non-medication treatment approach
  • Have treatment-resistant depression
  • Experience anxiety symptoms alongside depression
  • Are looking for evidence-based interventional psychiatry options
